related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up so

the pressure on romney in these presidential debates, the first one a week from tomorrow, guys. october 3rd, thanks very much. bill clinton on mitt romney and the 47%. the former president talks to cnn's pierce morgan about the republican nominee and why the debates could make all the difference. >> announcer: this is the day. the day that we say to the world of identity thieves "enough." we're lifelock, and we believe you have the right to live free from the fear of identity theft. our pledge to you? as long as there are identity thieves, we'll be there. we're lifelock. and we offer the most comprehensive identity theft protection ever created. lifelock: relentlessly protecting your identity. call 1-800-lifelock or go to lifelock.com today. thank you, mr. speaker, uh, members of congress. in celebration of over 75 years of our government employees insurance company, or geico...as most of you know it. ...i propose savings for everyone! i'm talking hundreds here... and furthermore.. newcaster: breaking news. the gecko is demanding free pudding. and political parties that are actual parties!

presidential debate. jessica, thanks. also in new york city mitt romney speaking at the clinton global initiative just ahead of the president. romney focused on foreign policy as well vowing he would link u.s. foreign aid to trade with help going to developing countries that remove barriers to investment and trade. he also discussed unrest in the middle east and said he would have a different approach than president obama. >> a lot of americans including myself are developed -- excuse me, are troubled by developments in the middle east. syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. the president of egypt is a member of the muslim brotherhood. our em bass dor to libya was assassinated in a terrorist attack. iran is moving towards nuclear weapons capability. we somehow feel that we're at the mercy of events rather than shaping events. a year from now i hope to return this meeting as president having made substantial progress towards the forms i've outlined. i also hope to remind the world of the goodness and the bigness of the american heart. never apologize for america

and the economy is set to be the topic of wednesday's presidential debate and mitt romney is going to try it tout his record at bain capital for a reason to pick him. the democrats are trying to peck up people who used to work bain capital, and a part of the election season, he was featured on a conference call with the now infamous, joe southic, a former employer of a bain company that later on claimed that mitt romney indirectly killed his wife and mitt romney deputy campaign manager stephanie cutter claemd not to remember and we also heard from mr. foster at the democrat national convention earlier this month. >> bain took over the bill, they loaded it up with millions in debt and within months, they used some of that money to millions, within a decade the debt kept growing and was so large the company was forced into bankruptcy. . >> as it turns out, mr. foster was actually regional director for the steel workers union who worked with gst steel, but not at gst steel and as there are two sides to every story. one former executive at gst steel says that what really happened when bain capital ca

that are more befitting a poorly researched high school debate. the reason the romney campaign at the end of the day is stumbling so seriously is that mitt can't quite figure out what he believes and even if he knew, he wouldn't be able to summon the courage to say it outloud. does mitt romney really believe that president obama thinks ambassador stevens' death was just a bump in the road? romney's spinelessness and on obfuscation of the treat speaks of a lack of respect for the voting public. he feels he can talk down to us, woo us without providing any answers and in the end be smug enough to make his innermost thoughts apparent only to those who pay $50,000 for a lunch to hear them. there's a lesson in all of this. democracy works. the public senses the lack of core mitt. it senses the lack of respect. it senses the lack of strength and it senses the lack of character all of these voids manifest about mitt romney himself. that's my view. now to my point. presidential debates. >> they say, ironically enough, romney may have an advantage. he had 19 debates during the primaries. all the republican debates. the president is rusty after four years. we'll see how that factors out. both men doing a lot of prep. >> all of this dirt -- dirty laundry was aired out for everybody to see and hear romney during the 19 debates. >> yeah, yeah. a lot of practice for sure. >>> all right. in california nearly 1,000 firefighters plan an all-out assault on a fire that is still smouldering near the border with mexico. >> the blaze has already killed one person and burned a dozen homes. abc's brandi hitt from los angeles with more on the destructive fire season so far. brandi. >> reporter: good morning, rob and paula. this is turning out to be a deadly and costly year battling wildfires. and here in california, we haven't even reached the peak of fire season yet. >> reporter: fast-moving flames from the shockey wildfire have kept fire crews in southeastern san diego down fi on their toes for three days. >> there was just flames that came up over the top -- i could

of the economy or foreign policy, i think he will lose. if we have a very small ball debate where the romney campaign spends two days criticizing president obama for not having the following six meetings and what about the sentences he said, obama thinks he can ride that to a narrow but clear victory. i think he's probably right. so i think the key is to mange the big -- make the bigger arguments against president obama. jon: you were a big advocate for the candidate service of paul ryan -- candidacy of paul ryan before he became mitt romney's vice presidential choice. has he brought the kind of gravitas to the ticket and some of these issues to the fore that you were hoping for? >> yeah, i think so. look, in the two-and-a-half weeks after ryan was picked, the romney/ryan ticket narrowed the gap from about four points to one point. it's opened up again to close to four points because i think at the convention and afterwards the romney campaign has lapsed into a kind of pre-ryan campaign. i think ryan's clarity about the choice ahead is helpful, his criticism of the replacement rests this mor

much debate between the republican candidate mitt romney and president obama -- we will open up the debate and expand the debate as we so often do on "democracy now, "to a third party candidates. we will be in denver, to and we will have third-party candidates responding to the same questions being put to mitt romney and president obama. we will broadcast democracy now.org and on radio as well. you raised the issue of the critical vote as we traveled through pennsylvania. a whole issue of voter suppression and having been in charlotte, a great civil-rights city, where the students from the historical black college in 1960 set up a lunch counter in to grant them and yet, what do we see today? state after state, efforts to suppress voting rights instead of expanding them. not enough people vote in this country. in pennsylvania, there is legislation now on the books that could disenfranchise between 750,000-1 million people. president obama won by 600,000 boats in pennsylvania last time. this really does determine the election. i don't care who you are for. this will determine the

has been winning the foreign policy debate. he has been winning on national security. lil' he's also winning on economics. >> that's what romney's biggest problem is. he's not winning on economy or national security. >> eliot: he should go on vacation. he would do better. every time he opens his mouth he goes down in the polls. ohio is the prime example. no republican can win without ohio. mitt romney down by 8 points. abby how is he going to come back? >> it is going to be very difficult. all i can say at this point he's not going to win on electability factor. he won't win on the relatability factor. >> eliot: likability, foreign policy economics. >> where he has some room to grow, i think is on substance. he needs to win the substance debate. that will be shown in upcoming debates. >> eliot: after watching for two years, he has to win the substance debate. he has how many days left? >> he's gotta provide more of a detailed, consistent plan that people can ingrate. >> he tried that with the secret

opportunities for either governor romney or president obama to score political points, upcoming debates are some other forum and what that argument might sound like on these issues. is there any earthly chance that either of them would try to do something like that? >> only a case that is that not to the radar of the broader public would be health care. i think it will be a reference back. the supreme court because the economy takes all the oxygen out of the election with a little bit of foreign affairs the supreme court just doesn't play among independent undecided voters. it is a motivator for one space to get out and get to the polls because you want this person to replace the justice when she did retires. if you want to know if there is any practical consequence in the short term, it would be at a point that carry me that the obama administration has declined to defend, the defense of marriage act. and president romney might well decide that he would defend the constitutionality of the statute, but it does not seem that that kind of social conservative question has a lot of civilians in some
